The wreck of the aircraft is located at the depth of 65 meters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #262626;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-155\" title=\"DSC_5288 (25)\" src=\"http:\/\/downlineaquatec.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/10\/dsc_5288-25.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"503\" height=\"337\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"color: #262626;\">\n<p>This specific \u201cTante Ju\u201d (the name comes from the German nickname for the Junkers 52) was discovered through a routine report of a Dornier 24 (Werknummer 3214), which from August 13, 1943, belonged to the German Maritime Rescue Squadron 7 (Seenotstaffel 7), based in Faliro, Athens, Greece. According to this entry, the Dornier 24 on September 6, 1943, took part in the search and rescue of a Junkers 52, with serial number (Werknummer) 6590, the I\/TG 4, i.e. the First Group (I=Erste Gruppe) of Transport Wing 4 (TG 4 = Transportgeschwader 4).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #262626;\">The aircraft was lost after ditching in the northwest of Kea, because of engine fuel problems. The crew and passengers were\u00a0transferred to Athens, with the loss of one person and two injured.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #262626;\">\u201cThe aircraft, whose axis is pointing south and its deepest point is at about 68 meters, is intact. There is no break, no parts missing. The aircraft was carrying weapons, we spotted a machine gun, and at the upper part of the fuselage the lid is open. Probably, the passengers exited through this hatch, after the Ju52 ditched at sea.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #222222;\"><b>Aircraft Features<\/b><\/p>\n<div style=\"color: #262626;\">\n<p>The Junkers Ju 52 is a German trimotor transport aircraft manufactured from 1931 to 1952. It saw both civilian and military service during the 1930s and 1940s. In a military role, it flew with the Luftwaffe as a troop and cargo transport and briefly as a medium bomber.<\/p>\n<p>Hitler used a Ju 52 for campaigning in the 1932 German election, preferring flying to transport by train. After he became Chancellor of Germany in 1933, Hitler was provided with a personal Ju 52. Named Immelmann II after the World War I ace Max Immelmann.<\/p>\n<p>In 1934, Junkers received orders to produce a bomber version of the Ju 52\/3m to serve as interim equipment for the bomber units. Two bomb bays were fitted, capable of holding up to 3,300 lb of bombs while defensive armament consisted of two MG 15 machine guns. The bomber could be easily converted to serve in the transport role.<\/p>\n<p>The Ju 52 first saw military service in the Spanish Civil War against the Spanish Republic. As a bomber, it participated in the bombing of Guernica. No more of the bomber variant were built after this war though it was again used as a bomber during the bombing of Warsaw in September 1939. The Luftwaffe then relied on the Ju 52 for transport roles during World War II, including paratroop drops. The first major operation for the aircraft was in the attack on Denmark and Norway on 9 April 1940. Later, Ju 52\u2019s participated in the attack on the Netherlands on 10 May 1940, where they were deployed in the first large-scale air attack with paratroops in history.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #262626;\">\n<p>After the invasion of Crete in 1941, the Ju 52 was relegated to transport supplies in and wounded out of combat zones such as Stalingrad.
