Alfa Romeo built\/designed a range of aircraft engines based on the\u00a0<\/span>Bristol Jupiter\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Bristol Pegasus\u00a0designs, designated\u00a0<\/span>Alfa 125<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Alfa 126<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Alfa 127<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Alfa 128<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Alfa 129<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Alfa 131<\/b>. All these essentially similar engines were mainly fitted to Italian bombers in World War II, Alfa Romeo building around 11,000 units between 1934 and 1944.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Italian engine designation system includes a suffix indicating major components or attributes. The most common were R for\u00a0<\/span>Riduttore<\/i>\u00a0– reduction gear and C for\u00a0<\/span>Compressore<\/i>\u00a0– compressor\/supercharger, followed by a number indicating the rated altitude in hundreds of metres, two speed superchargers were indicated by a double figure such as 10\/34. The\u00a0CANT Z.506\u00a0Airone<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(Italian:\u00a0Heron) was a triple-engine\u00a0floatplane\u00a0produced by\u00a0CANT\u00a0from 1935. It served as a transport and postal aircraft with the Italian airline “Ala Littoria”. It established 10 world records in 1936 and another 10 in 1937.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>During\u00a0World War II\u00a0it was used as a reconnaissance aircraft, bomber and\u00a0air-sea rescue\u00a0plane, by the\u00a0Italian\u00a0<\/span>Regia Aeronautica<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Regia Marina<\/i>, Aeronautica Cobelligerante del Sud,\u00a0Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span>Luftwaffe<\/i>. The military version revealed itself to be one of the best floatplanes ever built. Despite its wooden structure it was able to operate in very rough seas.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>A number of Z.506S air-sea rescue aircraft remained in service until 1959.<\/span>[3]<\/sup><\/p>\n

CANT z506<\/p><\/div>\n

In the war against Greece it was used against coastal targets and the Corinth canal. It played an important part in the conquest of many Greek islands, including\u00a0<\/span>Corfu,\u00a0<\/span>Cephalonia\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Zante. Due to its vulnerability against\u00a0<\/span>fighters, it was restricted to use by ‘recce’ units (<\/span>Squadriglie da Ricognizione<\/i>).<\/span>[9]<\/sup>Later in the war, it was used in\u00a0<\/span>maritime patrol\u00a0and air-sea rescue missions. The 506 was often forced to land in Spain, due to engine failure, combat damage or a lack of fuel.<\/span>\u00a0A special air-sea rescue version, the\u00a0<\/span>Z.506S\u00a0Soccorso<\/i><\/b>, was produced; it was used in small numbers by the\u00a0<\/span>Luftwaffe<\/i>.\u00a0[3]<\/span><\/p>\n
