Marauder Mark I, FK375 ‘D’ ‘Dominion Revenge’, of No. 14 Squadron RAF

Αναφορά προσθαλάσσωσης αεροσκάφους τύπου Β26 – Marauder στη Σέριφο με αριθμό FK 375 της 14 Sqn RAF,

Marauder FK 375 of 14 Sqn RAF took off at 0905 hours on 3 January 1943 from Shallufa in company of a second Marauder, to carry out a torpedo attack against enemy shipping in the Aegean Sea. The weather was bad and visibility poor. Shortly after passing Kea Island, north of the Rymlades Group, and on a south west course, a small vessel was observed. This was found to be part of a convoy of five vessels escorted by several aircraft including an autogyro. The Marauders separated to launch an attack. Two messages were received from FK 375 that fighters were attacking and the other that machine was damaged and would have to force land but torpedo attack delivered before fighter engagement. No further news received from aircraft or of crew.

Lt Young (Pilot of FK 375) who became a POW later stated “Forced to make landing on sea off Seriphas Island. When he freed himself and got out of the aircraft, Bennett was sitting on top of the fuselage near his escape hatch. He stated that the Observer was still inside and climbed back to try and get him out. No sooner had he climbed back in when the aircraft sank going down nose first in a rush. Bennett never appeared again. He died in a brave attempt to rescue another member of the crew”.

Αναφορά κατάρριψης αεροσκάφους τύπου Wellington της 148 Sqn RAF με αριθμό W 5584, νότια της Ελευσίνας.
Summary:
Wellington W 5584 of 148 Sqn RAF, took off at night on 19 January 1942 to bomb Salamis, Greece, and failed to return. An Italian broadcast on 21 January 1942 stated that an aircraft had been shot down over Elevsis on 19 January 1942.

A report on interrogations of local residents after the war and investigations carried out in Elevsis and Salamis areas state that an aircraft was shot down and crashed into the sea 2 miles south of Elevsis on 19 January 1942. It also stated that the Germans made a search of the area and could find no trace of the aircraft or crew. Elevsis is on the coast approx 10 miles North West of Athens, whilst Salamis is six miles south west of Elevsis on the island of Kuluri. It was assumed that the aircraft crashed in the sea near Elevsis and that the crew were lost at sea.

Αναφορά κατάρριψης αεροσκάφους τύπου Beaufighter στη Σέριφο με αριθμό NE 421.

Στις 11 Απριλίου 1944, σχηματισμός από τέσσερα Beaufighter επιτέθηκαν σε καΐκι 150 τόνων που βρισκόταν αγκυροβολημένο στη μέση του όρμου Λιβάδι, Σερίφου. Περιγράφεται η επίθεση των Beaufighter καθώς και η μαρτυρία των πιλότων για την συντριβή του Beaufighter NE421 μετά την επίθεση στο καΐκι με δύο ζεύγη R.P 25lb ( Rocket Projectile 3 ιντσών). Τα βλήματα αυτά χρησιμοποιήθηκαν από την RAF στη διάρκεια του Β’ Π.Π από βομβαρδιστικά αεροσκάφη εναντίον στόχων όπως σε δεξαμενές, τρένα, οχήματα καθώς και κτηρίων.

Από την έρευνα που πραγματοποιήθηκε από τα άλλα 3 Beaufighter αμέσως μετά τη συντριβή εντοπίστηκαν τα συντρίμμια του αεροσκάφους ενώ δεν υπήρξε καμία ένδειξη για τυχών επιζώντες.

enlish flagBeaufighter NE 421 of 603 (City of Edinburgh) Sqn RAF, took off from RAF Station,Gambut, Middle East, at 1355C hours on 11 April 1944 together with three other Sqn aircraft, for an offensive sweep of Antikithera, Serephos, Paros, Nios, Santorin and Caso. The formation of 4 Beaufighters arrived without incident at Serephos at 1608C, swept the west, north and eastern coasts and climbed overland to run into Livadhi Bay in the middle of which a 150 ton caique painted grey, was anchored.

The four aircraft formed into fairly close line astern to attack the caique on which lightack-ack positions were observed at the bow, stern and amidships. The leading and second aircraft made their attacks scoring hits, and WO Lynch then made the third attack with two pairs of 25lb R.P., the first pair undershooting and the second pair hitting amidships. The pilot of the 4th attacking aircraft reported seeing a flash comparable with a strike of an explosive bullet, beneath the starboard engine nacelle of NE 421 flown by WO Lynch.
Other crews saw black smoke trail from the starboard engine of NE 421 which continued to fly straight and level for one and a half minutes at 100 feet. The aircraft then turned starboard through 45deg. and lose height; at 1612C hours in position 37.05N 24.32E the starboard wing appeared to drop to the vertical, and in the intervening twenty feet before hitting the sea, the starboard engine burst into flames. The impact with the sea was marked by a large flash and explosion and the machine disintegrated.
The three remaining aircraft circled for 5 minutes and reported seeing wreckage and burning debris, including a semi inflated dinghy. There was no sign of any survivors. Some photographs of the crash scene were taken. No R/T message was received from NE
421 after the attack and before it crashed.

Beaufighter _ Κύθηρα

Tο Βρετανικό ελαφρύ βομβαρδιστικό Bristol Beaufighter κατέπεσε τον Απρίλιο του 1944, στο Νότιο μέρος των Κυθήρων στη θέση Aκ. Γκρόσο. Παρουσιάζονται κάποιες από τις σελίδες από την Έκθεση Μάχης του Γερμανού διοικητή της οκταμελούς Μονάδας Αντιαεροπορικών Καταστρώματος Koeler  που κατέρριψαν το Beuafighter στις 16 Απρίλη του 1944. Επίσης σκίτσο με την τελευταία πορεία του Βρετανικού αεροσκάφους  μέχρι το σημείο πτώσης.

Σύμφωνα με τα ημερολόγια μάχης που αφορούν τις Νοτιοαφρικανικές μοίρες (αρχείο: Μανώλης Μπαρδάνης) το αεροσκάφος το οποίο άνηκε στην δύναμή της 16 SAAF, παρά τις σοβαρές βλάβες από τα πυρά αντιαεροπορικών, κατάφερε και επέστρεψε στη βάση του.

Junker 52 – Φάληρο

Στην διάρκεια του 2ου Παγκοσμίου πολέμου υπολογίζεται ότι χάθηκαν ή καταστράφηκαν στην Ελλάδα 175 αεροπλάνα τύπου Junker 52. Το Junker 52 αποτελούσε το κύριο τακτικό μεταγωγικό αεροπλάνο των Γερμανικών δυνάμεων.

Ένα ακόμα αεροσκάφος τύπου Ju52,  βρέθηκε στην θαλάσσια περιοχή του Φαλήρου, ενώ εντοπίστηκαν και συντρίμμια σε μικρή απόσταση από ένα δεύτερο, ίδιου τύπου αεροσκάφους.

Το Αεροπλάνο βρίσκεται σε βάθος 52 μέτρων. Από την κατάσταση του ναυαγίου πιθανολογείται ότι προσέκρουσε στην θάλασσα με μεγάλη ταχύτητα. Αυτό μπορεί να δικαιολογήσει την θέση των φτερών (το αριστερό έχει αποκολληθεί πλήρως από την άτρακτο) ενώ στο δεξί έχει πραγματοποιηθεί πλήρη περιστροφή. Το αεροσκάφος βρίσκεται ανάποδα στο βυθό με το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της ατράκτου καλυμμένο από το λασπώδη βυθό.

Μεγάλος αριθμός ναυαγίων βρίσκεται στην ευρύτερη περιοχή του Σαρωνικού.

Ιστορικά, αεροσκάφος Ju52 3mg6e-W (tactical codeW1K) βυθίστηκε στην ίδια περιοχή μετά την πραγματοποίηση προσθαλάσσωσης, το οποίο όπως προκύπτει και από την φωτογραφία ανελκύστηκε την 1η Ιουνίου του 1943.

Ο πίνακας 17Β αφορά Γερμανούς πιλότους και καταρρίψεις αυτών σύμφωνα με το αρχείο kracker luftwaffe pilot archive. Πρέπει να διευκρινιστεί ότι σε όλους τους πίνακες – λίστες υπάρχουν συχνά λάθη ως προς τον τύπο του αεροσκάφους που καταρρίφθηκε. Αυτό οφείλεται σε μεγάλο βαθμό από τις αναφορές των πιλότων οι οποίοι ανάφεραν από λάθος διαφορετικό τύπου αεροσκάφους. Άλλες φορές τα αεροσκάφη αν και με μεγάλες ζημιές κατάφερναν να επιστρέψουν στη βάση τους. Για την Luftwaffe αυτά προσμετρούνταν σαν κατάρριψη. Η τοποθεσία των καταρρίψεων δίδεται κατά προσέγγιση με αναφορά το πιο κοντινό αεροδρόμιο, πόλη ή νησί.

Στον δεύτερο πίνακα (Update 11/01/1014) παρουσιάζονται τα στοιχειά όπως ακριβώς αναγράφονται στο kracker luftwaffe pilot archive.

About 70 of his victories were in Russia. One known victory was an I-16 of the 55th Fighter Aviation Regt., shot down 24 July, 1941 during Operation Barbarossa. A Soviet Yak-1 on 23 March, 1942. His 50th, a Soviet fighter on 3 June, 1942 while in 6/JG-77. Numerous victories in the Med. areas. He was the most successful German pilot over Malta. Shot down with wounds by P-38’s in his G-6 on 12 July, 1943 over Gela Sicily. Bailed successfully. His 99th victory, a B-24 over Italy on 29 May, 1944. His 100th victory, a B-24 SE of Pieve Italy on 13 June, 1944. His 101st, a Spitfire at Doesburg on 27 September, 1944. Nominated for the EL. After the war, he was known to have flown for the French in Indochina under the name Dichters Gustav Freytag. Prior to his Luftwaffe service, he was in the HJ, DLV and NSFK. Identified in a photo album, numerous documents and his Flugbuch found online.

Another, a SAAF P-40 7 km north northeast of Gazala: in See on 25 April, 1942. Scheiter was shot down on 7 June, 1942 by a P-40 of SAAF No. 2 Sq., piloted by Capt. Human. Scheiter managed to return to base on foot a few days later. A 2nd P-40 was downed 4 July, 1942 southeast of Emeisat N. Africa. Στα πλαίσια του KDE που πραγματοποιήθηκε τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2008, που αφορούσε το μέχρι τότε «Άγνωστο Ναυάγιο της Κέας» μετέπειτα “S/S Burdigala”  εντοπίστηκε πολύ κοντά στο πεδίο δραστηριοτήτων γερμανικό αεροσκάφος τύπου Junkers –  Ju52 . Ίσως το πιο “καλοδιατηρημένο” αεροπλάνο Β’ Π.Π που έχει βρεθεί στις Ελληνικές θάλασσες. Το μεταγωγικό αεροσκάφος  Ju-52,  με αριθμό κατασκευής Werk #6590, βυθίστηκε το 1943, μετά από προσθαλάσσωση που πραγματοποίησε βορειοδυτικά της Κέας λόγω προβλημάτων τροφοδοσίας. Το ναυάγιο του αεροσκάφους βρίσκεται στο βάθος των 65 μέτρων.

Η ταυτότητα της «Θείας Γιού» της Κέας (το όνομα προέρχεται από το Tante Ju, γερμανικό χαϊδευτικό όνομα, που είχαν δώσει οι Γερμανοί πιλότοι και αλεξιπτωτιστές στα Junkers 52) αποκαλύφθηκε μέσω της καταχώρησης ρουτίνας ενός διασωστικού γερμανικού αεροπλάνου, τύπου Dornier 24 (Werknummer 3214), το οποίο από τις 13 Αυγούστου του 1943 ανήκε στην γερμανική Μοίρα Θαλάσσιας Διάσωσης 7 (Seenotstaffel 7), με έδρα το Φάληρο. Σύμφωνα με την καταχώρηση αυτή, το διασωστικό Dornier 24 στις 6 Σεπτεμβρίου του 1943, με πλήρωμα τους Leutnant Pfaffendorf, Oberfeldwebel Becker, Feldwebel Steinbock, Feldwebel Bohnke, Obergefreiter Rausch και Feldwebel Lind, έλαβε μέρος στην έρευνα και διάσωση ενός Junkers 52, με αριθμό κατασκευής (Werknummer) 6590, του I/TG 4, δηλαδή της Πρώτης Σμηναρχίας (I = Erste Gruppe) της Μεταγωγικής Πτέρυγας 4 (TG 4 = Transportgeschwader 4) το οποίο είχε έδρα του το Καλαμάκι στην περιοχή του Σαρωνικού. Το αεροπλάνο είχε χαθεί μετά από προσθαλάσσωση στα βορειοδυτικά της Κέας, λόγω προβλημάτων τροφοδοσίας των κινητήρων με καύσιμα. Από τους επιβαίνοντες, στο Junkers 52, ένας απωλέσθη και δυο τραυματίσθηκαν, όλοι οι υπόλοιποι μεταφέρθηκαν σώοι στην Αθήνα.


«Το αεροπλάνο, του οποίου ο άξονας έχει κατεύθυνση νοτιοδυτική και το βαθύτερο σημείο του βρίσκεται στα 68 μέτρα, είναι άψογο. Δεν έχει κανένα σπάσιμο, δεν του λείπει κανένα μέρος και έχει τρεις κινητήρες, εκ των οποίων ο ρυγχαίος είναι γερμένος προς τον βυθό αλλά παραμένει ακόμα ενωμένος με την άτρακτο του αεροσκάφους. Το αεροπλάνο φέρει οπλισμό, εντοπίσαμε ένα πολυβόλο, και στο επάνω τμήμα του, στην σκεπή, διακρίνεται ο κενός χώρος της φρακτής, το σκέπασμα της οποίας βρίσκεται πεσμένο στον βυθό, ακριβώς δίπλα από την αριστερή πλευρά της ατράκτου του αεροσκάφους. Πιθανώς από την φρακτή αποβιβάστηκαν οι επιβαίνοντες μετά την προσθαλάσσωση του αεροπλάνου».

Η εταιρεία Junkers Flugzeug und Motorenwerke A.G ιδρύθηκε το 1895 από τον Hugo Junkers. Η σημαντικότερη ίσως γερμανική εταιρεία παραγωγής αεροσκαφών με καινοτόμες ιδέες για την εποχή της, δημιούργησε και ταυτόχρονα εξέλιξε τα πιο επιτυχημένα μεταλλικά αεροσκάφη της Luftwaffe.

 

Η εταιρεία Junkers η οποία αρχικά κατασκεύαζε θερμοσίφωνες, ξεκίνησε την παραγωγή πολεμικών αεροσκαφών την δεκαετία του 1930. Ίσως το πιο γνωστό “μοντέλο” της εταιρίας να ήταν το Ju87, γνωστό σαν STUKA. Βομβαρδιστικό καθέτου εφορμήσεως, που υπήρξε από τα ισχυρότερα όπλα της Luftwaffe. Το σημαντικότερο και το πιο επιτυχημένο κατά πολλούς ήταν το Ju88. Ελαφρύ βομβαρδιστικό με πολλαπλούς ρόλους και φυσικά αρκετές εκδόσεις Ju 188, Ju 388, που καμία από αυτές δεν μπόρεσε να ξεπεράσει τις δυνατότητες και τελικά να αντικαταστήσει το αρχικό μοντέλο. H Junkers επίσης ήταν αυτή που κατασκεύαζε από το 1920 τους κινητήρες JUMO (Junkers Motoren). Ήταν η πρώτη Γερμανική εταιρεία που κατασκεύασε σύγχρονους κινητήρες κατάλληλους για αεροπορική χρήση.Ο πρώτος κινητήρας της Junkers ήταν ο JUMO 211. Μετά το τέλος του πολέμου η εταιρεία Junkers ενώθηκε με την εταιρεία Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm (ΜΒΒ) όπου ασχολήθηκαν με την έρευνα σχετικά με το μέλλον της αεροδιαστημικής μεταφοράς.

 

 

Η κατασκευή του Ju52 ξεκίνησε το 1930, σαν μονοκινητήριο αεροσκάφος (Ju52/1m). Αργότερα για να αυξηθεί η ιπποδύναμη αλλά και η επιχειρησιακή δυνατότητα του αεροσκάφους τοποθετήθηκαν επιπλέον δυο κινητήρες στα φτερά (Ju52/3m).
Η πρώτη πτήση με την μορφή αυτή, δηλαδή σαν τρικινητήριο αεροσκάφος πραγματοποιήθηκε τον Απρίλιο του 1931. Ήταν εφοδιασμένο με τρεις κινητήρες Pratt & Whitney 525 ή 550 HP, ανάλογα με την χρήση και την σειρά του αεροσκάφους. Αργότερα τοποθετήθηκαν μηχανές BMW τύπου 123Α-3, 132Τ/-2 με ισχύει 725 και 830 ίππους αντίστοιχα. Κατασκευάστηκαν περίπου 5000 Ju52.

Στο τέλος του πολέμου μόνο 50 από αυτά είχαν πτητική ικανότητα!!
Το Ju52 είχε πολλαπλούς ρόλους και απόδειξη είναι οι περίπου 13 παραλλαγές του βασικού μοντέλου.
Η βασική του χρήση ήταν μεταγωγικό αεροσκάφος. Χρησιμοποιήθηκε ακόμα σαν βομβαρδιστικό (Ju 52/3mg3e),για την ρίψη αλεξιπτωτιστών, εμπορικό, για τις απογειώσεις ανεμοπλάνων και πολλές άλλες.
Η παραγωγή των Ju52 σταμάτησε στις αρχές του 1945.

The Ju-52 located close to Kea Island, Greece, is among the most well-preserved WW2 aircraft that have ever been found in the Greek seas.The Ju-52, with construction number Werk # 6590, was lost in 1943 after ditching northwest of Kea. The wreck of the aircraft is located at the depth of 65 meters.

This specific “Tante Ju” (the name comes from the German nickname for the Junkers 52) was discovered through a routine report of a Dornier 24 (Werknummer 3214), which from August 13, 1943, belonged to the German Maritime Rescue Squadron 7 (Seenotstaffel 7), based in Faliro, Athens, Greece. According to this entry, the Dornier 24 on September 6, 1943, took part in the search and rescue of a Junkers 52, with serial number (Werknummer) 6590, the I/TG 4, i.e. the First Group (I=Erste Gruppe) of Transport Wing 4 (TG 4 = Transportgeschwader 4).

The aircraft was lost after ditching in the northwest of Kea, because of engine fuel problems. The crew and passengers were transferred to Athens, with the loss of one person and two injured. 

“The aircraft, whose axis is pointing south and its deepest point is at about 68 meters, is intact. There is no break, no parts missing. The aircraft was carrying weapons, we spotted a machine gun, and at the upper part of the fuselage the lid is open. Probably, the passengers exited through this hatch, after the Ju52 ditched at sea.”

Aircraft Features

The Junkers Ju 52 is a German trimotor transport aircraft manufactured from 1931 to 1952. It saw both civilian and military service during the 1930s and 1940s. In a military role, it flew with the Luftwaffe as a troop and cargo transport and briefly as a medium bomber.

Hitler used a Ju 52 for campaigning in the 1932 German election, preferring flying to transport by train. After he became Chancellor of Germany in 1933, Hitler was provided with a personal Ju 52. Named Immelmann II after the World War I ace Max Immelmann.

In 1934, Junkers received orders to produce a bomber version of the Ju 52/3m to serve as interim equipment for the bomber units. Two bomb bays were fitted, capable of holding up to 3,300 lb of bombs while defensive armament consisted of two MG 15 machine guns. The bomber could be easily converted to serve in the transport role.

The Ju 52 first saw military service in the Spanish Civil War against the Spanish Republic. As a bomber, it participated in the bombing of Guernica. No more of the bomber variant were built after this war though it was again used as a bomber during the bombing of Warsaw in September 1939. The Luftwaffe then relied on the Ju 52 for transport roles during World War II, including paratroop drops. The first major operation for the aircraft was in the attack on Denmark and Norway on 9 April 1940. Later, Ju 52’s participated in the attack on the Netherlands on 10 May 1940, where they were deployed in the first large-scale air attack with paratroops in history.

After the invasion of Crete in 1941, the Ju 52 was relegated to transport supplies in and wounded out of combat zones such as Stalingrad. A total of 4845 were built.

Tο πρωινό της 20ης Μαΐου 1941,  ξεκίνησε από τους Γερμανούς η επιχείρηση για την κατάληψη της Κρήτης με την ονομασία «Merkur» (Ερμής). Ίσως η πιο παράδοξη επιχείρηση του Β’ Παγκοσμίου πολέμου που βασίστηκε εξ ολοκλήρου σε δυνάμεις αέρος.

Επιχείρηση “Ερμής”

Στη μάχη για την κατάληψη της Κρήτης έλαβαν μέρος 1300 Γερμανικά αεροσκάφη όλων των τύπων.

Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι το 44% από το σύνολο των 10000 αλεξιπτωτιστών, σκοτώθηκαν στις πρώτες ημέρες της επιχείρησης. Ο Διοικητής του  ΧΙ Fliegerkorps (Γερμανικές αερομεταφερόμενες μονάδες) Αντιπτέραρχος Kurt Student (1890 –1978) παραδέχτηκε ότι η Κρήτη υπήρξε ο τάφος των Γερμανών Αλεξιπτωτιστών. Σαν προσωρινός διοικητής του νησιού, αμέσως μετά την παράδοση της Κρήτης στις 31 Μαΐου 1941, έδωσε διαταγή για βάναυσα αντίποινα εναντίον του ντόπιου πληθυσμού, με αποκορύφωμα την σφαγή στο Κοντοµαρί Χανίων όπου διαπράχτηκε η πρώτη µαζική εκτέλεση αµάχων στην κατεχόµενη Ευρώπη αλλά και για το ολοκαύτωμα της Κανδάνου Χανίων στις 2 Ιουνίου 1941.

Στη διάρκεια της επιχείρησης οι απώλειες των Γερμανικών δυνάμεων ήταν μεγάλες. Σύμφωνα με τα βρετανικά αρχεία, κατεστράφησαν 220 αεροσκάφη ενώ 150 υπέστησαν σοβαρές ζημιές.

Ο όρμος της Σούδας δέχτηκε ισχυρούς βομβαρδισμούς καθώς αποτελούσε τη βάση του συμμαχικού στόλου.

Τα αντιαεροπορικά πυρά κατάφεραν να πλήξουν μεγάλο αριθμό Γερμανικών αεροπλάνων.

Aviation Archaeology in Greece 2Από ομάδα δυτών πληροφορηθήκαμε για εντοπισμό ενός Γερμανικού αεροσκάφους στον όρμο της Σούδας σε βάθος περίπου 40 μέτρων. Από ομάδα δυτών πραγματοποιήθηκε έρευνα πεδίου με σκοπό την αποτύπωση, καταγραφή και ταυτοποίηση του ναυαγίου. Λόγω της κατάστασης του αεροσκάφους και του συνόλου των οργανισμών που ζουν πάνω σε αυτό (βένθος) ήταν δύσκολο να βρεθεί ο αριθμός κατασκευής του αεροσκάφους -WerkNo, ώστε να είναι ακριβής η ταυτοποίηση του.

Μελετώντας τα Γερμανικά και Βρετανικά αρχεία καθώς και τις αναφορές που υπάρχουν στα βιβλία του Jochen Prien, εικάζουμε ότι το ναυάγιο του αεροσκάφους που βρίσκεται βυθισμένο στην Σούδα είναι ένα Messerschmitt Bf 109-Ε7 με αριθμό κατασκευής Werk Νο 4173 (12/39) και πιλότο τον Berthold Jung.

Το αεροσκάφος άνηκε στην 5/JG 77 με βάση τους Μολάους, Λακωνίας και μετέπειτα το Μάλεμε της Κρήτης.

Σύμφωνα με τα αρχεία, στις 20 Μαΐου 1941 το αεροπλάνο δέχτηκε αντιαεροπορικά πυρά με αποτέλεσμα να υποστεί ανεπανόρθωτες βλάβες (πιθανή απώλεια δεξιού ημιπτερυγίου) αναγκάζοντας τον πιλότο να εγκαταλείψει το αεροσκάφος και να συλληφθεί από τις συμμαχικές δυνάμεις.

Berthold Jung, Oberstleutnant (Αντισμήναρχος)

Ο Berthold Jung, ήταν πιλότος του Γερμανικού Ναυτικού, ο οποίος πριν τον πόλεμο μετατέθηκε οικειοθελώς σε μοίρα καταδιωκτικών της Γερμανικής Αεροπορίας. Μετά την κατάρριψη του αεροσκάφους του στα Χανιά συνελήφθη από τους συμμάχους και μεταφέρθηκε σαν αιχμάλωτος πολέμου στη Αυστραλία μέχρι το 1947. Μετά την απελευθέρωση του επέστρεψε στην Στουτγάρδη όπου εργάστηκε σαν διερμηνέας. Μετέπειτα κατετάχθηκε στο μεταπολεμικά νεοσυσταθέν Γερμανικό Ναυτικό, φτάνοντας μέχρι τον βαθμό του Υποναύαρχου, ενώ μετά την αποστράτευσή του (1973) διετέλεσε Πρόεδρος του Γερμανικού Ερυθρού Σταυρού στο Κίελο. Έφυγε από τη ζωή το 1992.

Ένα από τα καλύτερα καταδιωκτικά (καταδιωκτικά-ελαφριά βομβαρδιστικά) αεροσκάφη του 2ου παγκοσμίου πολέμου, που κατατάσσεται στη λίστα των πέντε πιο επιτυχημένων μαχητικών στην ιστορία της αεροπορίας.

Aviation Archaeology Greece26 Σχεδιάστηκε από τον Willy Messerschmitt και τον Robert Lusser και κατασκευάστηκε από την Bayerishe Flugzeugwerke μετέπειτα Messerschmitt AG (1938). Την περίοδο 1939-1945 παρήχθησαν περίπου 30.500 αεροσκάφη, αριθμός που αποτελεί το 47% της συνολικής Γερμανικής παραγωγής αεροσκαφών στην διάρκεια του Β’ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου.

Messerschmitt Bf109 αεροδρόμιο Μολάων Η πρώτη πτήση πραγματοποιήθηκε το 1935, (Messerschmitt Bf 109 prototype «V1» = Versuchsflugzeug 1 = πειραματικό αεροσκάφος 1). Στη διάρκεια του Β’ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου το Bf 109 κατάφερε τις περισσότερες καταρρίψεις εχθρικών αεροσκαφών από κάθε άλλο αεροσκάφος.

Κατασκευάστηκαν συνολικά 12 σειρές παραγωγής (BF 109 A//B/C/D/E/F/G/H/K/T/Z) με διαφορετικούς επιμέρους εξοπλισμούς, θωρακίσεις, οπλικά συστήματα και αυτονομίες, προσαρμοσμένα στις ιδιαιτερότητες των επιμέρους θερέτρων του Β’ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου.

Στην μάχη για την κατάληψη της Κρήτης έλαβαν μέρος 90 αεροσκάφη Bf109 Ε3-Ε7 σειράς, επονομαζόμενης «Emil».

Aviation Archaeology in Greece 1Ενδεικτικά, τα Bf 109 E7, σαν αυτό που βρίσκεται στον βυθό του όρμου της Σούδας έφεραν τον ακόλουθο οπλισμό:

  • 2 Χ Rheinmetall-Borsig 17 MG 7.92mm τοποθετημένα πάνω από το κάλυμμα του κινητήρα.
  •  2 Χ MG FF/Μ 20mm τοποθετημένα εντός των ημιπτερυγίων.
  •  1 X MG FF/Μ 20mm στην πλήμνη της έλικας (σε κάποιες σειρές)
